With many years of Corporate and work experience, have written quite a few Resignation letters and have also received many. Have noticed an interesting pattern and personality profiles in them and have listed them for you below for your ready reference
1. The Value Assessor
2. The Aspirer
3. The Mover on
4. The Boss Leaver
5. The Deliverance seeker
1. Value Assessor
These guys come in and seriously "talk" about having got an awesome opportunity and of leaving the job and even ask how soon they can be relieved. As you talk to them more and more, they indulge in self-flagellation but quickly warm up when you speak of their strengths and achievements. They start to light up like a X'mas tree when you say how much value they add to the organisation. Finally, when you ask them to stay, they offer a token resistance and even say they have to discuss with family and come back on their decisions. Sometimes they will resist and wait for the Boss' boss to also speak to them and tell them how much the organisation values them. They will stay 'cos their whole idea of this charade was to assess if the Boss values them. Some of them will even bring you a neatly typed R letter only to take it back, appearing very reluctant (all part of the act).
2. The Aspirer
The aspirer are people who have clear aspiration of moving up the value-chain and career ladder and get very impatient if the boss is not talking regularly to them on career progression and opportunities. They will therefore find themselves a good job and bring in the "R Letter". However, their idea is to get the Boss to talk some serious turkey about what, when and how progression in the career will happen. After securing clear promises from the Boss (or even Boss' boss), they will decide to stay back and withdraw the Letter, not reluctantly like the Value Assessor, but by reminding the Boss of the commitments made. You can be sure to promptly get an email listing out the key discussion points and promises made….
3. The Mover on
Unlike the Aspirer, these guys/gals have a clear idea of where they are heading and why the current job is no longer interesting or important for their career aspirations. They will Move on, no matter what you tell them, as they have clearly made up their minds and probably have a mind-blowing opportunity waiting for them. They seldom email or print their Letters but write it out by hand and are quite decisive when they walk in to the Boss' office to hand it over. Nothing will move them to change their mind. You have lost this employee for good so save up on your energy. And may be for no fault of yours. Let him/her move on with dignity and be your ambassador.
4. The Boss Leaver
These are clearly people who want to leave the Boss and not their jobs. For any number of reasons but simply they wanna work for someone else. A small variant of this is when they have decided to leave the boss but don't actually quit till the Boss tells them, even indirectly to leave. The boss simply has to ask a tough question in a meeting to make 'em get up and walk away (will let them claim that they didn't actually quit but sacked/fired).
5. The Deliverance seeker
By far the most interesting of profiles. These are akin to people who constantly seek deliverance from the cycle of life and death with their creator but will not end their lives by themselves for it is not a dignified way to go. They will constantly dialogue with the Boss to "let them go" and even pray for being relieved of their burden but will be too stately and noble to simply walk away or quit. They would keep up the dialogue patiently and even discuss opportunities in hand with the boss but will seldom leave till they get the signal. Once in a while they may even test the limits with the boss but that's about all they would do. When the boss finally says or hints, they quickly pack up and leave with a feeling of liberation!
May be a good idea to introspect what type you are/have been and what types you have working for you….
